Why rent a porta potty for a historic home remodel?

A remodel porta potty protects old plumbing, floors and finishes from a crew tracking in dust all day. Older Beaufort homes often have fragile pipes and one bathroom, and that bathroom is usually torn out during the job. One standard unit gives the crew a restroom on site, so nobody leaves the job to find one.

OSHA requires a toilet for construction crews; one toilet covers 20 or fewer workers under 29 CFR 1926.51. Our construction site toilet page covers crew sizes in more detail.

Where does a porta potty fit on a narrow historic lot?

A porta potty on a narrow historic lot usually fits in a side yard, at the back of a driveway, or beside a carriage house. The spot needs firm, level ground within about 25 ft of where the service truck can park. A standard unit is about 44 inches wide, so a side gate must open at least 48 inches.

  • Side yard with a 48-inch gate or wider.
  • Back of the driveway, clear of parked cars.
  • Behind a dumpster or material pile, door facing the house.

Can the porta potty go on the street or sidewalk?

A porta potty on the street, sidewalk or city right-of-way needs permission from the City of Beaufort first. Many historic district streets are narrow, and a unit at the curb can block parking, sight lines or a sidewalk. Keep the porta potty on private property when possible, and confirm street placement with the permit office.

Check with the City of Beaufort before any placement in the right-of-way. We only set a unit on a street or sidewalk once the customer confirms the city has signed off.

Placing the unit on private property is faster and avoids a permit wait.

How do I keep a remodel porta potty out of view?

A remodel porta potty stays out of view when the unit sits behind the house, a fence or a work trailer. Face the door away from the street. Gray or tan units blend in better than bright colors on many lots. A simple lattice or construction screen also helps on corner lots with two street sides.

  • Door faces the house or the work area, not the sidewalk.
  • Unit sits behind the front line of the house.
  • Screen with lattice, fence fabric or the dumpster.
  • Keep paper and trash inside; weekly service keeps the area tidy.

How long do historic home remodels usually keep a unit?

Historic home remodels often keep a porta potty for two to six months, since old-house work tends to grow once walls open. A kitchen or bath redo may need one or two 28-day cycles. A full restoration with structural repair can run much longer, and the unit stays on weekly service the whole time.

How does 28-day billing work on a remodel rental?

Remodel rentals bill on a 28-day cycle, not a calendar month, and a cycle is not prorated. Each cycle includes weekly pump-out, wash-down, disinfecting, deodorizer and a restock of paper and sanitizer. When the job ends, call for pickup; ending near the close of a cycle gets the most from the rental.

Full rules are on our rental terms page. Card payment works, including company cards, and approved commercial accounts can pay by invoice.

Questions customers ask

What does a monthly porta potty cost for a home remodel?

A standard jobsite unit runs about $200–$290 per 28-day cycle with weekly service, plus a one-time delivery and pickup fee set by distance. Beaufort addresses sit at the low end of that delivery fee.

Does the homeowner or the contractor rent the unit?

Either one can rent the unit. Contractors often keep the rental on a company account and move the unit to the next job when the remodel ends.

Can the unit be locked overnight?

A unit can be locked with a hasp and padlock when the crew leaves. Give dispatch the code or a key spot so the service tech can get in on service day.

Can I move the unit to the backyard halfway through the job?

Call dispatch and we will move the unit on a service day. The new spot still needs firm ground within about 25 ft of where the truck parks.

Do I need a historic review approval for a temporary porta potty?

A temporary unit on private property usually does not go through design review, but rules can change. Confirm with the City of Beaufort permit office before the job starts.
