Tech specs: how big is a standard porta potty?

A typical standard porta potty is about 44 inches wide, 48 inches deep and 90 inches tall. The empty unit weighs about 200 pounds and holds about 60 gallons of waste. A 48-inch gate is the practical minimum. Narrower gates mean a driveway or front-yard spot instead.

Who should rent a standard porta potty?

A standard porta potty fits builders, roofers, remodelers, farm crews and anyone hosting a casual outdoor party. Standard units also fill out larger events, where a row of them handles the crowd. Formal weddings and guests in dress clothes usually want a sink and a flush, so those renters often step up to deluxe units.

Crews on a 28-day cycle get weekly service built in. See how construction site toilet rentals handle crew counts, gate codes and lockable units. Homeowners in the middle of a remodel often keep one unit by the driveway so the crew stays out of the house.

What happens on a standard porta potty service visit?

A standard porta potty service visit covers five jobs. The driver pumps the tank and washes the walls and seat. Next come disinfecting the touch points, fresh deodorizer and a restock of paper and sanitizer. Jobsite units get one service visit per week. Busy sites can add a second weekly visit or a one-time extra service.

Lowcountry summers are long and muggy, and heat speeds up odor. Read our notes on summer heat and porta potty servicing before planning a July jobsite.

Where should a standard unit sit on Lowcountry ground?

A standard unit should sit on firm, level ground away from low spots that pond after a summer storm. Beach sand needs a flat, packed spot so the unit does not lean. Pluff mud and marsh edges are a no. In hurricane season, a unit near a wall or fence can be strapped down.

  • Packed dirt, gravel, a driveway or a paved lot work best.
  • Face the door away from the prevailing salt wind on open marsh-front lots.
  • Keep the unit out of the drip line of trees that drop sap and moss.
  • Leave a clear path for the pump hose, about 25 feet or less.

Our sand and marsh placement guide goes deeper on island and riverfront lots.

How does a standard rental run from booking to pickup?

A standard rental runs in five steps: call or send a web quote, approve the itemized price, mark the spot, get delivery, then pickup or weekly service. Same-day delivery runs Monday through Saturday when you call by noon in Beaufort County. Nobody needs to be home if the spot is marked.

  1. QuoteGive the address, dates, unit count and whether the job is an event or a jobsite.
  2. SignApprove the price and e-sign the rental agreement; pay by card or invoice for approved accounts.
  3. Mark the spotA cone, flag, ribbon or note shows the driver where the unit goes.
  4. DeliveryThe driver calls about 30 minutes ahead and sets the unit level.
  5. Service or pickupJobsites get weekly service; event units are picked up Monday.

Standard porta potty or deluxe flushing unit?

A standard porta potty costs less, lasts longer between services and handles crews and casual crowds well. A deluxe flushing unit adds a foot-pump flush and sink, which guests notice at showers and receptions. For 50 guests at a backyard party, a standard unit plus a hand wash station often covers the same need.

How many standard porta potties do I need?

One standard porta potty covers up to 20 workers on a jobsite under OSHA Table D-1. Crews of 20 to 199 need one seat plus one urinal per 40 workers. For parties, one standard unit rated around 200 uses handles roughly 50 guests over a 4-hour event, with a second unit for longer events or heavy drinking.

The jobsite rule comes from OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51. Our OSHA jobsite toilet guide breaks down the table, and the porta potty count guide handles parties and weddings.

Questions customers ask

Does it come with toilet paper and hand sanitizer?

Every standard unit arrives with toilet paper and a filled hand sanitizer dispenser. Jobsite units get restocked at each weekly service, and events can request extra rolls on the quote.

Can I lock it?

Jobsite units can get a hasp and padlock setup at no charge on request. You keep the key or the combination, and the driver needs access on service day.

Will it fit through my backyard gate?

A standard unit is about 44 inches wide, so the gate needs to be at least 48 inches. Measure the opening at its narrowest point, including the latch and hinges.

Will it smell in the heat?

Every unit gets deodorizer at delivery and at each service, and the roof vent pulls odor up and out. On a hot, busy site, a second weekly service and a spot with afternoon shade help the most.

Can I move it myself once it's placed?

Moving a unit with waste in the tank risks a spill and can crack the base. Call dispatch and the driver repositions the unit on the next visit.

Are event units cleaner than construction units?

Every unit is washed and sanitized at our yard before it leaves. Event units arrive stocked and ready, and jobsite units get the same cleaning every week on the service route.

How much does a standard porta potty cost?

An event weekend starts from about $225 with delivery and pickup in Beaufort County. A jobsite unit runs about $200–$290 per 28-day cycle with weekly service, plus a one-time delivery and pickup fee.

Can a standard unit go on the street in front of my house?

Placement in a state road right-of-way falls under an SCDOT encroachment permit, and city streets have their own rules. A driveway or the yard edge avoids both, so confirm with the permit office before planning a curbside spot.
