OSHA rule 1926.51(f) requires washing facilities on jobsites where crews apply paint, coatings, herbicides or insecticides, or work with other harmful contaminants. The washing facilities must sit near the worksite. Farm crews have a separate rule, 1928.110, that calls for one hand washing facility per 20 hand laborers when 11 or more work the field.

On jobsites, the refill, gray-water pump-out and soap and towel restock happen at each weekly service. Event stations arrive full. Summer crews wash more often, so watch the soap level from June through September.

A hand wash station should sit within a few steps of the toilets, on firm, level ground, with the sinks facing the walkway. On windy marsh-front or beach sites, turn the towel side away from the salt wind so towels stay dry. Sand needs a flat, packed spot so the station does not lean.

In hurricane season, a station is lighter than a toilet unit and blows over easily. Dispatch can pick up or strap stations when a storm watch is posted.
