Porta Potty Placement on Sand, Marsh and Lowcountry Ground
Good porta potty placement on sand, marsh edges and root-heavy yards keeps a unit level, clean and easy to service. Here is what our drivers look for when they pull up to a Lowcountry lot.
- Delivery area
Island lots, marsh-front yards and inland sites across the Lowcountry. Check your ZIP.
- Arrival
Driver calls about 30 minutes ahead. Mark the spot with a cone, flag or ribbon and nobody needs to be home.
- Right unit
Standard units fit through a 48-inch gate. ADA units and trailers need open truck access to the spot.
- Cleaning
Weekly pump-out needs the truck within about 25 ft of the unit, so pick a spot near firm driveway or road.
- Full cost
One itemized quote. A spot the truck can reach on the first try avoids a second trip.
Dispatch answers Monday to Saturday, 7 AM to 7 PM. A phone quote takes about five minutes.

What ground works best for porta potty placement?
Firm, level ground within about 25 ft of where the service truck can park works best for porta potty placement. Packed dirt, gravel, short grass and pavement all hold a unit steady. Soft pluff mud, loose dune sand and steep slopes cause tipping, sinking and service trouble, so pick the firmest flat patch on the lot.
- Truck reach
- About 25 ft from the truck
- Gate width
- 48 in minimum for a standard unit
- Standard footprint
- About 44 in W × 48 in D
- ADA footprint
- About 87 in square
Not sure your spot will work? Call and describe the ground; dispatch will tell you where the unit should go.
Call now for same-day(843) 268-6920Can a porta potty go near pluff mud or the marsh edge?
A porta potty can go near the marsh edge only on firm ground above the king-tide line. Pluff mud looks solid at low tide but gives way under a unit and a truck. Set the porta potty on the high side of the lot near the house or road. Keep the unit off any spot that floods.
How do sandy island lots change placement?
Sandy island lots need a flat spot with packed sand or a hard base, because loose sand lets a porta potty lean as people step in. A patio paver, plywood pad or gravel driveway edge keeps the unit level. Our truck also needs packed ground to park, so avoid soft dune sand for the truck path.

On beach-side lots, set the door away from the ocean breeze. Blowing sand inside a unit makes cleaning slower and wears the latch.
Is it safe to place a unit under a live oak?
Placing a porta potty under a live oak is fine when the ground is flat and the truck can still reach the unit. Big surface roots make the base rock, so pick a spot between roots, not on top of them. Watch low limbs too; the service truck and hose need clear space overhead.
- Set the base on flat soil between roots.
- Keep the door clear of Spanish moss and low branches.
- Leave room for the truck to park outside the drip line if the yard is soft.
- Do not block a tree protection fence on a jobsite.
What if the only spot is behind a gate or on a slope?
A spot behind a gate works when the gate opens at least 48 inches, since a standard unit is about 44 inches wide. ADA units, at about 87 inches square, and restroom trailers need full truck access. A gentle slope is fine, but a steep slope tips the unit, so the driver will move the porta potty to flatter ground.
| Unit | Gate or path needed | Ground |
|---|---|---|
| Standard unit | 48-inch gate or wider | Firm and level |
| ADA-style unit | Open truck access | Flat, ground-level entry |
| Restroom trailer | Open truck access | Level, near water and power |
How do I mark the spot so nobody has to be home?
Mark the porta potty spot with a cone, flag, ribbon or a note on a stake, and nobody has to be home for delivery. Text dispatch a photo with the mark in view. Our driver calls about 30 minutes ahead, and a clear mark keeps the unit from landing in the wrong corner of the lot.
- Pick the spotFirm, flat and within about 25 ft of where the truck parks.
- Mark the spotCone, flag or bright ribbon tied low.
- Open the wayUnlock gates and move cars from the truck path.
- Send a photoText the marked spot to dispatch with your address.
Which way should the door face?
The porta potty door should face the path people walk, away from the street and away from strong wind. On a jobsite, face the door toward the work area. At a home party, face the door toward the yard, not the neighbor's window. Leave about 3 feet clear in front of the door for easy entry.

Questions customers ask
Will the delivery truck drive on my lawn?
Our driver avoids soft lawns and parks on the driveway or road when the ground is wet. Pick a spot within about 25 ft of pavement or packed gravel so the unit can be carried in and serviced from the hard surface.
Can you put a porta potty on a dock or deck?
A deck or dock is not a good spot because the service hose and the unit's weight need solid ground. Place the unit on the ground near the walkway instead.
My lot is all sand. What should I put under the unit?
A sheet of exterior plywood or a few flat patio pavers gives the unit a level base on sand. Set the base before delivery and mark the spot.
How close can the porta potty be to my septic lid or well?
Keep the unit off septic lids, well heads, irrigation heads and storm drains. A few feet to the side of those spots is plenty, as long as the truck can still reach the unit.
Can the driver move the unit if I picked a bad spot?
The driver will set the unit on the nearest firm, level ground if the marked spot is soft or steep, then text you a photo of where the unit went.
